Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia Central Senatorial District have rejected the outcome of the party’s senatorial primary election held on May 18, 2026, describing the process as a “farcical display of brigandage” that failed to reflect the will of party members.
In a strongly worded protest letter addressed to the APC National Working Committee (NWC) led by Abdullahi Ganduje, the aggrieved stakeholders accused certain individuals of hijacking the exercise and denying genuine party members the chance to participate.
Led by Chief Uche Onyejekwe and Chief (Mrs.) Ego Nwamuo, the protesters said party faithful had initially welcomed the adoption of direct primaries, expecting it to promote transparency and inclusiveness ahead of the 2027 general elections.
However, they alleged that “desperate and overzealous politicians” manipulated the process to impose a predetermined outcome.
“We regret to inform you that the party lost a golden opportunity to advertise its commitment to internal democracy and citizen inclusivity,” the stakeholders stated.
They claimed that in several wards, no actual voting took place, yet votes were allegedly allocated behind closed doors.
The protesters described scenes of confusion and chaos, with many party members left stranded for hours without accreditation or opportunity to vote.
According to them, members of the APC National Assembly Primary Election Committee, INEC officials, and security personnel were conspicuously absent in many wards and local government areas.
The stakeholders particularly rejected the declaration of Emeka Atumah as winner of the primary, describing the announced figures as “outrageous and bewildering” given the lack of credible voting in several areas.
They listed specific wards where no election occurred, including Oloko Ward 2 and Usaka Ward in Ikwuano LGA, several wards in Osisioma, Ntighauzo Primary School, and Okporo Ahaba Ward 1, among others.
The protesters challenged anyone claiming that voting took place in those areas to produce video evidence, insisting that party members are ready to testify that no primary election was conducted.
They further questioned the role of Hon. Thomas Nkoro, who allegedly announced the results despite not being a member of the national primary election committee.
The stakeholders urged the APC national leadership to immediately investigate the alleged irregularities, review the outcome, and sanction those responsible in the interest of the party’s unity and credibility.
They expressed confidence that a proper investigation would justify either nullifying the result or ordering a rerun in the affected areas.
The protest adds to growing concerns over the conduct of APC primaries in some parts of the country as the party prepares for the 2027 elections.
