All 22 Political Parties Submit Membership Registers to INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that all 22 registered political parties have fully submitted their membership registers, meeting the extended deadline for the 2027 General Elections.

INEC confirmed the compliance in a statement on Saturday, noting that the parties submitted the registers by the revised deadline of May 10, 2026.

The Commission had initially set April 21, 2026, as the deadline but granted a two-week extension following a meeting with party leaders on March 24, 2026.

The extension, formally announced on March 27, 2026, was designed to accommodate the parties’ proposed dates for their primaries, which are scheduled to hold between April 23 and May 30, 2026.

This aligns with Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act 2026, which requires parties to submit their membership registers at least 21 days before conducting primaries.

“All registered political parties complied with the requirement within the extended timeframe,” INEC stated.

The Commission added that the submitted registers will now undergo necessary verification processes as stipulated by law.

This development clears a key pre-primary requirement and paves the way for political parties to proceed with their internal elections ahead of the 2027 polls.
