Former House of Representatives member, Farouk Lawan, is making a political comeback as he seeks a return to the National Assembly in the 2027 general elections.
Lawan, who once represented the Bagwai/Shanono Federal Constituency in Kano State, has successfully scaled the screening process of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and emerged as the preferred candidate of party stakeholders from Bagwai and Shanono Local Government Areas.
His renewed ambition follows a prolonged legal battle stemming from the 2012 fuel subsidy bribery scandal. Lawan, who chaired the House ad hoc committee investigating the fuel subsidy regime, was convicted of demanding and receiving a bribe.
He served a five-year prison term and was released in 2024 before receiving a presidential pardon and clemency in October 2025, which restored his civil and political rights.
The development marks a significant return to politics for the veteran lawmaker after years away due to his conviction.
