A prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Segun Showunmi, has declared that the 2027 presidential election will primarily be a contest between President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Showunmi made the remarks during a Thursday interview on News Central Television while discussing the upcoming presidential poll.
“In terms of who can lead the country, it is between Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar and one will obviously beat the other. The 2027 presidential contest is shaping up mainly between Tinubu and Atiku,” he said.
The PDP stalwart, who previously served as Atiku’s spokesperson on two occasions, expressed confidence in the former Vice President’s capabilities while acknowledging President Tinubu’s ongoing efforts. He noted that he has closely followed developments since 2019 and observed what he described as quiet restructuring and recalibration under the current administration.
Showunmi was particularly critical of Labour Party’s Peter Obi, stating he sees “absolutely zero” from him in terms of concrete solutions. “I’ve never heard him on security. I’ve not even heard him say anything on social stabilization of the country,” he added.
He emphasized that he is carefully evaluating the candidates and eagerly awaiting substantive policy proposals from those in the race.
The comments come as political maneuvering for the 2027 general elections continues to intensify across Nigeria’s major parties.
