Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat has officially thrown his hat into the ring for the 2027 Lagos State governorship election, submitting his expression of interest and nomination forms on Friday.
In a statement announcing the move, Hamzat described the decision as driven by a commitment to continued service and the desire to build a more functional Lagos that works for all residents.
“This journey is about service, responsibility, and building a Lagos that works better for every family, every business and every person that calls this state home,” Hamzat said.
The Deputy Governor acknowledged the progress made under the current administration while emphasizing that significant work remains.
“We have made progress together but there is still more to do,” he noted. “I am stepping forward with experience, purpose and a deep belief in the future of our state.”Hamzat concluded that “the journey to a greater Lagos continues,” signaling his intention to build on existing foundations if elected.
The submission marks the formal beginning of what is expected to be a keenly contested race for the Lagos governorship in 2027.
Hamzat, who has served as Deputy Governor since 2019 alongside Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is widely seen as a strong contender within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
