Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) and prominent human rights activist, has declared that if elected President in 2027, he would not appoint a traditional Minister of Defence, saying his “defence minister” would be drones.
Sowore made the statement while speaking on insecurity and the need for modern technology-driven solutions to Nigeria’s security challenges.
“If I’m president of Nigeria, I’m not buying any jet anymore. I’m buying unmanned aerial vehicles. I want to invest in drones. They are pretty expensive, but they are more effective,” he said.
He added: “That’s why I said somewhere, if I’m president of Nigeria, I won’t have a minister of defence. My minister of defence would be a drone.”
Sowore argued that drones would provide superior surveillance, tracking of bandits and kidnappers in difficult terrains, and more efficient operations with fewer personnel compared to conventional fighter jets.
He emphasised a two-pronged approach to insecurity: immediate aggressive action against bandits using modern equipment, technology, and intelligence, alongside long-term investments in technology like drones for defence and national security.
The comments form part of Sowore’s ongoing campaign messaging as he positions himself as a candidate offering radical, technology-driven solutions to Nigeria’s governance and security problems ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
