Dr. Adefolaseye Adebayo, South West Coordinator of the Obi-Kwankwaso OK Movement, has claimed that approximately 10 million Nigerians registered with the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) just 24 hours after former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi defected to the party.
Adebayo made the assertion during a Monday interview on Arise TV, pushing back against critics who argue that Obi’s move from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has weakened his 2027 presidential prospects, particularly in the South East.
According to reports, Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso officially dumped the ADC on Sunday and joined the NDC ahead of the next general elections.
The high-profile defection has sparked widespread reactions, with some describing it as a setback for Obi’s ambitions.
Adebayo countered the narrative, emphasizing Obi’s broad national appeal. “Mr Peter Obi has a lot of followership across Nigeria. You can’t say that Obi’s chances or the chance of the South East reduced drastically,” she said.
“24 hours after Peter Obi left ADC, 10 million Nigerians registered with NDC and that says a lot.”
She added that Obi’s support is driven more by his personality and perceived capability than by any specific political platform, noting his influence spans all six geo-political zones.
The development comes amid ongoing realignments in Nigeria’s opposition politics as various figures and groups position themselves for the 2027 polls.
