Zamfara State House of Assembly has suspended two local government chairmen for alleged financial misappropriation as part of efforts to promote accountability and transparency in governance.
The suspended officials are Mannir Mu’azu Haidara of Kaura Namoda Local Government Area and Umar A. Faru of Bukkuyum Local Government Area.
The decision was reached during Wednesday’s plenary session after the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs presented its report. The report was delivered by Deputy Speaker Adamu Aliyu Gumm, who also serves as the committee’s vice chairman.
House spokesperson Bello Kurya said the Assembly unanimously adopted the committee’s recommendation following deliberations led by Speaker Bilyaminu Moriki.
According to Kurya, the two chairmen were suspended for refusing to honour invitations from the committee to explain how they spent funds allocated to their councils. Their absence was viewed as a serious act of disrespect to the legislative institution and a lack of transparency.
“The invitations were issued to enable them to provide explanations regarding the expenditure of funds,” Kurya stated.The suspension takes immediate effect and will remain in place until the ongoing investigation into the financial activities of all 14 local government councils for the 2025 fiscal year is completed.
The Assembly has directed the affected chairmen to immediately hand over to their respective vice chairmen. Its resolutions have been transmitted to the state executive arm for necessary action.
The House reiterated its commitment to ensuring prudent management of public resources and holding local government officials accountable.
