‘You Can’t Teach INEC Chair Amupitan’ — Presidency Fires Back at ADC Leaders

The Presidency has dismissed criticisms from African Democratic Congress (ADC) leaders, asserting that they cannot lecture INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan on his duties.

President Bola Tinubu’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi, described Amupitan as a distinguished legal expert at the peak of his career, a law professor, teacher of law, and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

The response follows a press conference on Thursday in Abuja where ADC Interim National Chairman Senator David Mark, National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, and spokesman Bolaji Abdullahi called on President Tinubu to sack Amupitan, accusing him of failing to conduct credible elections.

In a post on X, Ajayi stated: “We all can at least agree that the INEC chairman is at the top of his career academically and professionally... Senator David Mark, Mr. Peter Obi, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola and Mr. Bolaji Abdullahi, certainly, can’t teach him what that latin legal maxim ['status quo ante bellum'] means.”

Ajayi accused the ADC leaders of turning their party’s internal crisis into a national issue involving INEC and the President.

The sharp rebuttal highlights growing tensions between the ruling APC and the emerging opposition coalition ahead of future elections.
