Veteran musician, Baba Fryo has said it is now difficult to secure a hit song, stressing that most singers are resorting to stunts for virality.
Speaking in a recent episode of the I Say What I Say podcast, the veteran singer claimed that the recent controversy of Wizkid comparing himself with the late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, was a stunt, aimed at promoting his joint EP with Asake, ‘Real.’
“It take a lot to get a mega hit now. Some go even do some kind stunt. Shey you dey see the one with ‘Wizkid pass Fela’; all these ones na stunt.
“A lot of artists spark controversy on purpose so that people will stream their songs. I takes a lot to get a hit now because they have raised the bar so high,” he expressed.
Baba Fryo explained that during his days, bagging a hit was easier because it depends on the quality of music and genuine public acceptance with minimal promotion.
He blamed industry players, including DJs and music executives as well as artists themselves for the current bottlenecks in securing hit songs.
He alleged that some DJs and music executive sabotage quality music at the expense of trends.
The veteran musicians urged Nigerians artists and music executives to return to prioritising quality music over trends and social media virality.
