The Nyesom Wike-backed faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has distanced itself from a high-profile meeting between the Taminu Turaki-led PDP faction and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the engagement as unauthorised and not reflective of the party’s position.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, the Wike-backed PDP urged members and the public to disregard the meeting, insisting that no formal or informal engagements had been held with the ADC or its representatives.
“Those who participated in the said meeting did so in their personal capacities and cannot be taken as representing the PDP,” Mohammed said. He described claims linking the PDP to alliance talks with the ADC as “baseless.”
The reaction follows a solidarity visit by leaders of the Turaki-led PDP faction, including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, to the David Mark-led ADC on Wednesday in Abuja.
The closed-door meeting, held at Mark’s residence in Apo, was attended by prominent opposition figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Governors Rotimi Amaechi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Aminu Tambuwal, and Peter Obi, among others.
Sources close to the meeting revealed that discussions centred on possible collaboration and realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, with a focus on forming a united front to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and unseat President Bola Tinubu.
Governor Makinde described the gathering as “a show of solidarity,” while PDP National Secretary Taofeeq Arapaja emphasised the need to defend democratic values against perceived threats to opposition parties.
The development highlights the deepening cracks within the PDP, where rival factions continue to pull in different directions amid ongoing leadership crises and court battles.
While the Wike faction maintains firm control following recent court rulings, the Turaki faction appears open to broader opposition alliances.
The Wike-backed PDP also assured its members that preparations for party primaries are progressing, with timelines and guidelines to be announced in due course.
