The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has expressed strong disapproval over Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed’s intention to defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the move as unfortunate.
The Abdulrahman Mohammed-led National Working Committee of the PDP, through its National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, stated that the governor’s demands during reconciliation efforts were excessive and difficult for the party to meet. They urged him to step down as Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, claiming his personal interests have worsened the party’s ongoing crisis.
Governor Mohammed made the announcement on Tuesday after hosting a delegation from the ADC, led by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, at the Bauchi Government House. He cited the prolonged internal crisis in the PDP and failed reconciliation attempts as reasons for considering the switch.
“We have found ourselves in a very serious situation. I have done everything possible to ensure reconciliation, but it has not worked,” Mohammed said. He revealed that committees were set up to explore options, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), but they were not welcomed there.
He described the ADC as the most acceptable platform so far, though consultations with stakeholders are still ongoing. A final decision and formal announcement are expected by Thursday.
The governor also pointed fingers at external influences aggravating the PDP’s divisions, specifically accusing Wike of playing a role in the impasse. He claimed to have engaged APC leaders and President Bola Tinubu in reconciliation bids without success.
Babachir Lawal explained that the ADC delegation visited on the instructions of the party’s national leadership, headed by former Senate President David Mark. The goal, he said, is to build a united opposition front ahead of the 2027 general elections, praising Mohammed’s leadership and experience.
The Wike-backed PDP bloc responded that true leadership involves both leading and following at times. Jungudo Mohammed noted that the governor failed to seize available reconciliation opportunities and instead presented “unwieldy” demands, such as control over certain National Working Committee positions and influence in Bauchi State party structures.
“If he chooses to go in this direction, we wish him well,” the PDP spokesman said, while stressing that Mohammed should have resigned from the Governors’ Forum earlier. Efforts to get a reaction from the rival Tanimu Turaki (SAN)-led PDP faction were unsuccessful.
This development highlights the deepening crisis in Nigeria’s main opposition party, which has split into rival factions with separate conventions, court battles, and leadership disputes. The Wike-aligned group recently held a convention in Abuja that produced a new National Working Committee, which has gained some recognition.
The situation is further complicated by reports of mass resignations in some state chapters, such as Kebbi, where executives cited the party’s alleged alignment with the ruling APC as a betrayal of its opposition role.
The PDP’s internal turmoil, now stretching nearly three years, continues to trigger defections and weaken its position as it prepares for future elections.
