Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has demanded a full investigation into the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) airstrike that killed over 50 civilians at Jilli village market on the Borno-Yobe border.
In a strongly worded Facebook post on Sunday, April 12, 2026, Gumi criticised the strike, which hit the busy weekly market on Saturday evening.
He questioned who authorised the operation and called for immediate accountability.
Gumi referenced previous similar incidents, including the Tudun Biri bombing, describing them as repeated “mistakes” that continue to claim civilian lives.
“Terror cannot be fought with another terror,” he said. “There should be an immediate Senate hearing on these so-called ‘mistakes’ of bombing villages, markets and civilian targets.”
“We need answers, not condolences,” Gumi declared, stressing that sympathy without proper investigation is unacceptable.
The cleric warned that such incidents erode public trust and weaken the fight against insurgency by alienating local communities.
The Nigerian Air Force has acknowledged the reports and said it has launched its own investigation into the airstrike.
