US President Donald Trump has announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran, agreeing to suspend bombing and attacks on the country.
The announcement came less than two hours before Trump’s deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, amid escalating tensions in the ongoing conflict.
Trump stated that the ceasefire is conditional on the complete, immediate, and safe reopening of the Strait of Hormuz for international shipping.
“I agreed to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks,” Trump said, describing the move as subject to Iran allowing safe passage through the strategic waterway.
The agreement follows Iran’s earlier commitment to reopen the Strait for two weeks and suspend defensive operations if attacks by the US and Israel are halted.
The temporary ceasefire is expected to pave the way for further negotiations, with talks between the US and Iran reportedly scheduled to begin in Islamabad, Pakistan.
