High-level US and Iranian negotiators have arrived in Pakistan for critical face-to-face peace talks aimed at solidifying a fragile two-week ceasefire, even as mutual suspicion, unresolved sanctions issues, and disputes over Lebanon threaten to derail progress.
US Vice President JD Vance, leading the American delegation, was greeted by Pakistan’s foreign minister shortly after landing in Islamabad.
His Iranian counterparts, headed by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, arrived hours earlier, underscoring the urgency of the diplomatic push.
Ghalibaf struck a cautious tone, stating that while Iran enters the talks with “good intentions,” his team “do not trust” the United States.
Vance, for his part, had previously cautioned that Washington would walk away if Tehran attempted to manipulate the process.
The negotiations, facilitated quietly by Pakistan as an intermediary, represent one of the most challenging diplomatic tests of Vance’s tenure.
Pakistani officials, leveraging their longstanding ties with both nations, have worked behind the scenes to bring the sides together in a tightly controlled process.
Despite a sombre but somewhat hopeful atmosphere, significant hurdles remain.
Key sticking points include whether the ceasefire will formally extend to Lebanon, disagreements over sanctions relief, and broader regional security concerns.
Parallel talks between Lebanese and Israeli officials in Washington are adding another layer of complexity.
The ceasefire, brokered through Pakistani mediation, has held tenuously amid ongoing regional frictions, including tensions involving Israel and Hezbollah.
Both sides are under pressure to convert the temporary truce into a more durable agreement, with observers warning that failure could escalate hostilities across the Middle East.
Pakistan’s role as host draws on its strategic relationships: close ties with Iran, including a shared border, and important security and diplomatic links with the United States.
Former President Donald Trump has previously praised Pakistan’s military leadership for its understanding of the Iranian dynamic.
As talks get underway, the world watches closely to see whether distrust can be overcome and whether a lasting cessation of hostilities can emerge from this delicate diplomatic opening.
