Nigerians Don’t Live on Petrol – Atiku Slams Tinubu’s Bayelsa Remarks

The Atiku Abubakar Media Office has strongly criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for using fuel price comparisons with other countries to justify the current economic hardship in Nigeria.

In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Mr Phrank Shaibu, the office described the President’s remarks in Bayelsa as misleading and disconnected from the realities of ordinary Nigerians.

The statement accused the President of selectively focusing on fuel prices while ignoring key economic indicators such as purchasing power, income levels, and the high cost of living.

It argued that comparing Nigeria’s petrol prices with those in Kenya and South Africa is flawed without considering broader economic realities.

Despite lower fuel prices, Nigeria has a higher cost of living than Kenya, while Kenya’s GDP per capita is nearly double that of Nigeria.

A minimum wage earner in Nairobi takes home the equivalent of about ₦170,000 monthly,  more than twice Nigeria’s ₦70,000 minimum wage.

“While a Kenyan earns more and pays more, a Nigerian earns far less and struggles under crushing economic pressure,” the statement said.

Atiku’s office also faulted Nigeria’s rigid national minimum wage, which unlike Kenya’s tiered system, does not reflect differences in regional living costs, putting more strain on urban dwellers.

The statement expressed disappointment that the President resorted to “statistical convenience” instead of showing empathy and offering real solutions at a time of widespread hardship.

“Nigerians are not asking for comparisons; they demand tangible relief. Nigerians deserve honesty. Nigerians deserve better,” it concluded.
