United Nigeria Airlines has suspended a staff member and launched a full investigation following an alleged case of unprofessional conduct involving a passenger with reduced mobility at Abuja airport.
The incident took place on Monday, March 30, 2026, during check-in for flight UN0526 from Abuja to Yenagoa, involving passenger Doris Akonanya.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, the airline confirmed receipt of the incident report detailing allegations of misconduct by the staff member in relation to the passenger’s condition.
United Nigeria described the matter as one it takes “very seriously,” stressing its zero-tolerance policy for any form of misconduct, discrimination, or abuse.
“We operate a zero-tolerance policy for any form of misconduct, discrimination, or abuse, and we are firmly committed to providing safe, respectful, and accessible travel for all, particularly passengers with reduced mobility who require additional care and support,” the airline stated.
The carrier apologised to Ms. Akonanya and her family for the distress caused, noting that the incident does not reflect its ethics, values, vision, or standard of service.
“We sincerely apologize to Ms. Akonanya and her family for the distress this incident has caused. This experience does not reflect our ethics, values, vision, or the standard of service we are committed to delivering to all travelers,” it added.
The airline said it has been in direct communication with the passenger and her family, offering support and updates on actions taken.
The suspended staff member remains under investigation, with appropriate disciplinary measures to follow based on the outcome.
United Nigeria further pledged to strengthen staff training, processes, and oversight to prevent similar incidents and reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive and accessible air travel for all passengers.
