Troops of Sector 9 of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) of the Nigerian army have reportedly foiled an attack by suspected terrorists in Shendam LGA of Plateau state.
According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency
publication focused on the Lake Chad region, the incident occurred around
7:30am on Friday along the Yelwa cattle market axis following a distress call
over sporadic gunfire.
Citing security sources, Makama said troops swiftly
mobilised to the area, forcing the attackers to flee into nearby bushes upon
sighting the advancing forces.
The publication said troops conducted a follow-up operation
and found two locals who sustained gunshot injuries during the attack.
The victims were evacuated to a nearby hospital for
treatment, while efforts are ongoing to track and apprehend the fleeing
suspects.
The incident comes days after about 28 persons were killed
when gunmen attacked a bar in Angwan Rukuba in Jos north LGA of the state.
The attack sparked panic across nearby communities, with
residents fleeing for safety as gunshots echoed through the area.
In response, the state government imposed a 48-hour curfew
in the LGA to ease tensions.
President Bola Tinubu, on Thursday, met with the families of
victims of the attack, reassuring them that such an incident will not happen
again.
“There is nothing I can give you, whether money in billions,
but console you and promise you that this experience will not repeat itself,”
the president had said.
