US President Donald Trump was swiftly escorted off stage by Secret Service agents during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton hotel on Saturday night after a gunman opened fire near the venue.
The incident occurred shortly after the event began, prompting chaos in the ballroom as multiple gunshots rang out.
Attendees ducked under tables and took cover, while Secret Service agents rushed to the head table to evacuate President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other senior administration officials.
According to President Trump, one Secret Service operative was shot at close range during the confrontation but was protected by his bulletproof vest.
The president and all protectees were reported safe and unharmed.The suspect, described as a lone gunman armed with multiple weapons including guns and knives, attempted to breach a security checkpoint in the lobby area before being intercepted.
He was taken into custody, and law enforcement described him as acting alone. The dinner was disrupted, with plans to reschedule the event.
The dramatic security breach has drawn widespread attention, highlighting ongoing concerns about threats at high-profile Washington gatherings.
