US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that Iran’s tallest bridge had been destroyed in US-Israeli airstrikes, issuing a stark warning of further destruction unless Iran agrees to end the ongoing five-week war.
The strike targeted the B1 bridge in Karaj, about 20 miles (35 kilometers) southwest of Tehran. Still under construction, the bridge was described as the tallest in the Middle East, featuring a 447-foot (136-meter) column. It was intended to connect Tehran with the western city of Karaj.
Trump shared footage on social media showing smoke rising from the site and the bridge collapsing. In his post, he declared: “The biggest bridge in Iran comes tumbling down, never to be used again – Much more to follow! IT IS TIME FOR IRAN TO MAKE A DEAL BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE, AND THERE IS NOTHING LEFT OF WHAT STILL COULD BECOME A GREAT COUNTRY!”
Iranian officials reported that the strikes killed at least eight people and wounded 95 others. Ghodratollah Seif, deputy governor of Alborz province, confirmed the casualties via state TV and Fars news agency. A second strike reportedly hit while emergency teams were responding to the first.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the attack on X, stating: “Striking civilian structures, including unfinished bridges, will not compel Iranians to surrender. It only conveys the defeat and moral collapse of an enemy in disarray.”
The incident follows Trump’s Wednesday speech, in which he claimed the US- and Israel-launched war beginning on February 28 was nearly over. He threatened to bomb Iran “back to the Stone Ages” if it refused to meet US demands.
Due to reporting restrictions, independent verification of the damage and casualty figures in Iran remains limited.
