The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has confidently declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will participate fully in the 2027 general elections, including fielding a presidential candidate.
Speaking at a recent media parley in Abuja, Wike addressed concerns about the party’s future amid its prolonged internal crises. “I have told Senator Saraki that, by the grace of God, the PDP will be on the ballot in 2027,” he said, drawing applause from delegates.
Wike emphasized that the party had successfully held a legitimate national convention monitored by the electoral umpire, describing it as a key step in renewing and repositioning the PDP.
He assured members that the party remains alive and ready to contest, countering doubts raised by figures like former Senate President Bukola Saraki and Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro.
Although Wike remains a PDP member while serving in President Bola Tinubu’s All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration and has publicly pledged support for Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid he insisted the opposition party will field its own candidates.
The declaration comes as the PDP continues efforts to resolve factional disputes and rebuild after significant setbacks in recent years. Wike’s comments signal optimism about the party’s survival and competitiveness, even as speculation swirls around potential alliances and its ultimate strategy for the next presidential race.
Political observers note that Wike’s dual role continues to fuel tensions within the PDP, with some viewing him as a stabilizing force and others questioning his loyalty amid his support for the ruling party’s candidate.
