Former Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye has strongly criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing him of harboring ambitions to rule indefinitely like Cameroon’s long-serving President Paul Biya.
In a video posted on his Facebook page on April 6, 2026, Melaye warned that such efforts to entrench prolonged leadership and weaken democratic opposition would not succeed in Nigeria.
“Tinubu’s ambition to be the Paul Biya and Musa Kankan of Nigeria will not work,” Melaye declared.
He urged Nigerians to actively resist any moves toward a one-party state, dismissing what he called a “Kabiyesi mentality” a reference to absolute monarchical or dictatorial rule as incompatible with democracy.
“We will resist one party state. Kabiyesi mentality will not work. Arise Nigerians,” he added.
Melaye described the current situation in the country as “perilous times” never before witnessed, lamenting that Nigeria has a president who “doesn’t care.”
The outspoken opposition figure’s comments come amid ongoing political tensions as attention turns toward the 2027 general elections, with critics accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of seeking to dominate the political landscape.
Paul Biya has ruled Cameroon since 1982, making him one of the world’s longest-serving leaders.
