Sokoto Recruits 1,500 Nurses, Midwives to Boost Rural Healthcare

Sokoto State Government has recruited and deployed over 1,500 nurses and midwives to underserved rural communities as part of efforts to strengthen the state's health workforce and improve healthcare delivery in hard-to-reach areas.

Governor Ahmed Aliyu disclosed this while inaugurating a scholarship scheme in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to train 500 community midwives.

The governor noted that the recruited health personnel have been posted to rural areas under a mandatory rural posting policy, complete with incentives to encourage them to serve in those locations.

He explained that the recruitment is a deliberate step aimed at addressing critical shortages in the health sector, particularly in primary healthcare facilities across the state’s local government areas.

In addition to the 1,500 nurses and midwives already recruited, the state is currently recruiting over 2,400 community health workers to further expand access to quality healthcare services and improve health indicators, especially maternal and child health outcomes.

The governor expressed confidence that these interventions, alongside the new training programme for 500 community midwives, will significantly reduce maternal and infant mortality rates while bringing quality healthcare closer to rural residents.

The latest moves form part of the Sokoto State Government’s broader commitment to revitalising the health sector and ensuring equitable healthcare distribution between urban and rural communities.
