Shettima Visits Borno, Condoles with Army Over Deadly Benisheikh Attack

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Saturday visited Maiduguri, Borno State, to commiserate with the Nigerian Army and the state government following a deadly terrorist attack on military positions in Benisheikh that claimed the lives of several officers and soldiers, including Brigadier General Oseni Braimah.

The visit was made on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, according to a statement issued by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President).

Shettima described the fallen soldiers as heroes who paid the ultimate price in defence of the nation.“These men wore the uniform for all of us. They stood to protect our communities, our families, and the future of our children.

"Their courage reminds us that peace and security often come at a very heavy cost,” he said.

He assured that the Federal Government would continue to support the military and vowed that criminals would have no hiding place under President Tinubu’s administration.

The condolence visit followed a fierce midnight assault on Thursday by suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters on multiple military formations in Benisheikh around 12:30 am.

The attackers advanced in large numbers in a well-coordinated operation, one of the most intense in recent months, before pushing into nearby civilian areas.

The Nigerian Army, through the Headquarters of Operation Hadin Kai, confirmed that two officers and two soldiers died in the engagement.

It dismissed as false and misleading social media reports claiming higher casualties, including the death of the brigade commander.

Lt.-Col. Sani Uba, Media Information Officer of the Northeast Joint Task Force, clarified that the brigade commander was actively coordinating the response in a Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle that was only temporarily immobilised during combat.

The incident has drawn widespread condemnation, with calls for sustained military operations against insurgents in the Northeast.
