Severe Flooding Leaves Trail of Destruction in Taraba state

Heavy rainfall has triggered severe flooding in parts of Jalingo, the capital of Taraba State, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

The downpour began around 3:00 a.m. on Saturday and continued for several hours, causing floodwaters to inundate multiple neighborhoods.

The Mile Six axis and areas around Excellence International School were among the worst hit, with water sweeping through residential compounds and overwhelming homes.

Residents reported rapid rises in water levels that left little time to salvage belongings. Floodwaters displaced household property, damaged personal items, washed out pathways, and caused structural damage to some buildings.

Debris littered the affected areas in the aftermath. No casualties have been reported so far, but several households were displaced and suffered significant losses.

The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of parts of the city to flooding, even from moderate to heavy rains, largely due to inadequate or blocked drainage systems.

A resident, Nasiru Illiya, expressed frustration: “We are tired of this happening every year. The drainage systems here are either blocked or completely insufficient. Each time it rains heavily, we are at risk.”

With stagnant floodwaters now posing health risks, including the potential spread of waterborne diseases, residents are calling on the state and local governments to urgently intervene.

They demand improved drainage infrastructure and long-term flood control measures to prevent recurrence as the rainy season progresses.

Flooding has been a recurring challenge in Jalingo, prompting earlier government initiatives such as the Boboji Storm Water Control Project aimed at addressing perennial issues in vulnerable areas.

This latest event comes amid broader national warnings of heightened flood risks across many states in 2026.
