The Senate has formally named Senator Tony Nwoye, representing Anambra North, as the new Minority Whip.
Nwoye was unanimously selected by the Senate Minority Caucus on Wednesday to fill the position vacated after Senator Osita Ngwu (Enugu West) defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Senator Nwoye, who was elected in 2023 on the Labour Party (LP) platform before switching to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in March 2026, now assumes one of the key principal positions in the Senate’s minority leadership.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the development after the Minority Caucus forwarded Nwoye’s nomination, which enjoyed overwhelming support from minority senators.
The emergence of Nwoye as Minority Whip marks a significant gain for the ADC, which now holds a principal office in the upper chamber amid the ongoing wave of defections to the ruling APC.
On the same day, other senators also defected: Anthony Yaro (Gombe South) moved from PDP to APC, while Aliyu Wadada (Nasarawa West) formally joined the APC from the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
This development further reflects the shifting political alliances in the National Assembly ahead of future elections.
