Resident Doctors Suspend Planned Strike, To Review Situation in May

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has suspended its planned nationwide strike following fresh assurances from the Federal Government on key welfare demands.

The decision was taken during a virtual emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Saturday, April 25, 2026.

NARD had earlier issued a 21-day ultimatum to the government over unresolved issues including salary arrears, poor working conditions, and other welfare concerns.

In a statement after the meeting, the association said it would reconvene in May to review the government’s level of compliance with the new assurances before deciding on the next line of action.

The suspension is expected to prevent disruption to healthcare services across teaching hospitals and federal medical centres nationwide.
