The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to urgently address the rising cost of drugs and strengthen local pharmaceutical production.
Lawmakers raised concerns over the soaring prices of essential medicines, warning that many Nigerians can no longer afford basic healthcare due to the impact of inflation, foreign exchange pressures, and heavy reliance on imported drugs.
The House urged the government to implement policies that support local drug manufacturers, including access to affordable financing, tax incentives, and improved power supply to reduce production costs. Members also pushed for stronger regulation of drug pricing and distribution to curb exploitation.
The resolution followed a motion highlighting how high drug costs are worsening health outcomes, especially for low-income households and patients managing chronic illnesses.
The House mandated relevant committees to liaise with the Federal Ministry of Health, NAFDAC, and other agencies to develop immediate measures to stabilize drug prices and expand domestic production capacity.
