The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has formally welcomed Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, into its fold.
The development comes days after Baba-Ahmed announced his resignation from the Labour Party, citing unresolved internal crises, ideological drift, and a departure from the principles that initially attracted him to the party.
In a statement, the PRP described the move as a significant boost to its vision of building a credible, history-rich political platform ahead of future elections.
The party expressed confidence that Baba-Ahmed’s experience, intellectual depth, and commitment to good governance will strengthen its ranks.
Baba-Ahmed had earlier declared that he would exit the Labour Party at midnight and join the PRP, describing the latter as “the new destination” with a solid historical foundation.
His defection is seen as a major political realignment, especially as opposition parties continue to reposition themselves in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
The PRP’s leadership is expected to formally integrate Baba-Ahmed and possibly assign him a strategic role within the party in the coming days.
This latest development further highlights the ongoing realignments and internal challenges within Nigeria’s opposition political parties.
