Pope Leo XIV will on Monday begin an ambitious 11-day apostolic journey to four African countries, his first major international trip of 2026 and the most extensive African tour by a pontiff in recent years.
The US-born pontiff, who succeeded Pope Francis in May 2025, will travel more than 18,000 kilometres across Algeria, Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea from April 13 to 23.
The itinerary includes 11 speeches, seven Masses, and visits to a dozen locations.According to Vatican sources and reports, the visit will focus on interfaith dialogue, peace and reconciliation, social justice, inequality, and human rights at a time of global uncertainty.
Key Highlights of the Trip:Algeria (April 13–15)
Pope Leo will become the first pope to visit the North African nation, where Islam is the state religion.
He is expected to visit the Great Mosque of Algiers, meet President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, and pray privately in a chapel honouring the priests and nuns killed during Algeria’s civil war.
He will also visit Annaba, the historic home of Saint Augustine.Cameroon (April 15–18)
In the majority-Christian country, the Pope is expected to deliver a strong message of peace and reconciliation, especially in Bamenda, the epicentre of the long-running conflict in the English-speaking northwest.
He will also visit Catholic hospitals, schools, and charitable institutions.Angola (April 18–21)
In oil-rich but poverty-stricken Angola, Leo is expected to emphasise equitable distribution of natural resources, the fight against corruption, and social justice.
He will visit Luanda and the historic pilgrimage site of Muxima.Equatorial Guinea (April 21–23)
The final leg of the tour will take him to the small, oil-rich nation under long-term authoritarian rule.
With about 80% of the population Catholic, the Pope is anticipated to balance support for the local Church with calls for human rights and good governance.
This will be Pope Leo’s third trip outside Italy since his election, following visits to Turkey and Lebanon in 2025, and Monaco earlier this year.
