Police arrest fake soldier, six others over Plateau palm Sunday killings

The Plateau State Police Command has announced the arrest of a fake soldier identified as Yakubu Abdullahi and six other suspects in connection with the Palm Sunday attack in Gari Yawaye community, Angwan Rukuba, Jos North LGA, where over 30 people were killed and several others injured.

Plateau police spokesman, Alfred Alabo, who confirmed the arrest of the suspects in a statement on Wednesday, disclosed that Abdullahi was apprehended dressed in military camouflage, a development he described as a calculated attempt to deceive unsuspecting victims and evade security checks.

He noted that a search on the suspect led to the recovery of an extra shirt and a forged identity card of the Nigerian Military School, reinforcing suspicions of deliberate impersonation.

Alabo stated that the arrest of the suspects followed intensive investigation and security operations launched by the command following renewed violence in the state capital, which started on Sunday, March 29th and has continued with pockets of violence in other parts of the metropolis.

“In the same operation, another suspect, Matthew Musa, 27, was arrested with two locally made firearms believed to have been used in violent operations within affected communities,” Alabo said in the statement.

“All seven suspects are currently in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), where comprehensive investigations are ongoing to unravel the full network behind the attacks. They are expected to be charged to court upon conclusion of the probe.

“The Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, has ordered the immediate deployment of additional personnel to volatile areas across Jos and adjoining communities, in a decisive move to restore calm and prevent further bloodshed.”

The police spokesman stressed that the command has issued a strong warning to criminal elements, declaring zero tolerance for violence and lawlessness.

“The command will not fold its arms and allow miscreants to exploit the situation. Anyone found wanting will face the full wrath of the law,” the statement added.
