INEC’s Decision to Derecognize David Mark’s Executives was Utterly Self-Inflicted - Felix Morka

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly pushed back against accusations that it masterminded the leadership crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC), insisting that the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) decision to derecognise Senator David Mark and other executives was caused by the ADC faction’s own disregard for the rule of law.

In a direct response to the unfolding drama, Felix Morka, the APC’s National Publicity Secretary, stated that the ruling party had no hand in the developments leading to INEC’s action.

Morka’s full quote: “INEC’s decision to derecognize David Mark’s executives was utterly self-inflicted. APC didn’t do that, APC didn’t orchestrate the hijack of ADC by that executive. "We didn’t, they did that by completely ignoring the rule of law.”

INEC on Tuesday (April 1, 2026) removed the names of Senator David Mark (as National Chairman) and Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola (as National Secretary), along with other members of the National Working Committee, from its official portal.

The commission cited a Court of Appeal order directing parties to maintain the status quo ante bellum pending the determination of the substantive leadership suit at the Federal High Court.

As a result, INEC said it would cease engagement with any faction and would not monitor the ADC’s planned national convention or any other party activities until the matter is resolved.

The ADC and several opposition figures, including chieftain Dele Momodu, have condemned INEC’s move as overly sweeping and potentially destabilising, with some alleging political interference. However, the APC maintains that the crisis stems entirely from internal actions by the Mark-led faction, which it accuses of hijacking the party structure in violation of legal processes.

This latest development has intensified tensions in Nigeria’s opposition politics, as the ADC had been viewed by some as a possible platform for a broader coalition ahead of future elections. The leadership dispute remains before the courts, with further legal proceedings expected.

Morka’s statement reinforces the APC’s position that opposition parties are grappling with self-created problems rather than external sabotage by the ruling party.
