Plateau Tertiary Institutions Declare Indefinite Strike Over Unresolved Demands

The Joint Union of Plateau State-owned Tertiary Institutions (JUPTI) has declared an indefinite strike, set to begin at midnight on Monday, over long-standing issues with the Plateau State Government.

The union, which comprises staff unions from various state-owned higher institutions, accused the government of failing to address key demands, including the implementation of 25 and 35 per cent salary increments, domestication of the Polytechnic Act, and issuance of employment letters to staff of institutions such as the College of Agriculture, Garkawa, and the College of Arts, Science and Technology (CAST), Kurgwi.

JUPTI Chairman, Comrade Yohanna Igyem, who addressed journalists on Saturday, said negotiations that started in 2024 have repeatedly ended in deadlock despite several meetings and ultimatums issued by the union.

He recalled that the union had given a 14-day ultimatum on January 9, 2026, followed by a seven-day ultimatum on March 6, 2026. A meeting scheduled for April 21, 2026, was later postponed indefinitely.

“After an emergency meeting on April 23, 2026, we issued a 48-hour ultimatum effective from April 24 to midnight of April 27, 2026. If the government fails to meet our demands by then, we will have no choice but to embark on an indefinite strike without further notice,” Igyem stated.

The union expressed frustration over what it described as the government’s lack of commitment, noting that similar demands have been implemented in other states.

No official reaction has been received from the Plateau State Government as of the time of this report.

The strike, if it proceeds, is expected to disrupt academic activities across all Plateau State-owned tertiary institutions.
