VIDEOS: Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso Lead ‘Save Democracy’ Protest in Abuja

Prominent opposition figures and chieftains of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peter Obi and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on Wednesday led supporters in a “Save Democracy” protest at Maitama Roundabout in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

The demonstration was organised by members and leaders of the ADC, along with other concerned Nigerians, to push back against what they described as growing threats to the country’s democratic institutions, including moves toward a one-party system.

Peter Obi had earlier announced the protest via his X (formerly Twitter) handle, urging Nigerians to defend democracy.

In his statement, Obi declared:“We, members and leaders of the ADC and other well-meaning Nigerians, lovers of democracy, are saying that our democracy must not be killed.

"We say no to a one-party system, and for that reason today we are calling on Nigerians who believe in unity, peace and the security of our country to join us as we defend democracy in our land.”

A flyer that circulated online ahead of the event invited participants to Maitama Roundabout at 8:00 a.m., with the message: “SAVE DEMOCRACY PROTEST! Defend our freedom, protect our vote! Save our democracy. Your vote matters.”

The protest reflects ongoing concerns among opposition voices about the state of Nigeria’s democracy amid political realignments and tensions leading toward future elections.
