Osun LG Chairmen Donate 300 Motorcycles to Police, Others

In a significant boost to security operations across Osun State, the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Osun State chapter, on Tuesday donated 300 motorcycles to various security agencies in the state.

The motorcycles were handed over at the Osun State Police Command headquarters in Osogbo. Receiving the donation on behalf of all beneficiary organisations, the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, praised President Bola Tinubu for granting financial autonomy to local government areas, describing it as a move that has enabled this kind of grassroots support for security.

“The donation of these motorcycles will undoubtedly enhance our operational capacity, particularly in hard-to-reach areas, and will improve response time and patrol effectiveness,” Gotan said.

He assured the donors that the motorcycles would be used judiciously for their intended purpose and emphasised that security remains a collective responsibility requiring collaboration from all stakeholders.

Speaking on behalf of the local government chairmen, Osun ALGON Chairman, Mr Samuel Idowu, explained that the donation was made possible due to the financial autonomy currently enjoyed by the councils.

According to Idowu, each of the 30 local government areas in the state is donating 10 motorcycles, distributed as follows:

3 to Police formations

2 to the Department of State Services (DSS)

2 to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC)

1 each to Vigilante groups, Hunters, and local/community security networks

“This initiative is aimed at strengthening community policing and ensuring that no part of our state is left vulnerable,” Idowu added. He urged the security agencies to maintain the motorcycles properly and deploy them effectively.

The donation comes amid ongoing political tension between the Osun State Government and the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the legitimacy and tenure of the current local government chairmen.
