Opposition Preparing for Election, Tinubu, INEC Preparing for Coronation – Dele Farotimi

Nigerian human rights lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi has alleged that President Bola Tinubu, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and the judiciary are working to undermine the 2027 general elections by turning them into a predetermined "coronation" rather than a competitive democratic process.

Farotimi made the claim in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday night, April 1, 2026. He contrasted the efforts of opposition parties with what he described as the plans of key institutions and the president.

“The opposition are preparing for an election, INEC, the judiciary, and Tinubu are prepping for a coronation,” Farotimi wrote.

His statement came shortly after INEC announced the removal of former Senate President David Mark and ex-Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola from its official portal as the National Chairman and National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), respectively.

The electoral body further stated it would not recognize factions within the ADC or monitor any conventions or congresses organized by groups linked to the affected leaders.

Farotimi’s remarks reflect ongoing skepticism among some opposition voices about the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system ahead of the 2027 polls, amid internal divisions in several opposition parties and debates over INEC’s role.

No immediate response from the presidency, INEC, or the judiciary was reported on the allegation as of the time of publication.
