Ondo Govt Approves Construction of Multiple Hospitals, Upgrades Psychiatric Facility

The Ondo State Government has given the green light for the construction of several new hospitals across the state, including 100-bed and 50-bed facilities, as part of a major healthcare infrastructure expansion.

The approval was announced after the State Executive Council meeting. Dr Banji Ajaka, the Commissioner for Health, revealed that the government is constructing multiple hospitals to significantly boost healthcare delivery.

The projects include:

100-bedded hospitals in Ikare-Akoko, Ore, and Okitipupa

Additional 100-bedded facilities at the State Specialist Hospital and another specialist hospital in Igbokoda

50-bedded hospitals in Irele and Igbokoda

The government also approved two general hospitals designed as “one-stop shops” that will house laboratory, X-ray, consultation, and pharmacy services under one roof for faster and more efficient patient care.

Speaking on the development, Dr Ajaka said:“This development is expected to improve access to healthcare services across the state. The one-stop shop model is designed to streamline service delivery and eliminate the need for patients to move between different units before receiving treatment.”

The council further approved the construction of a new Neuropsychiatric Hospital and the upgrading of the existing Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital in Akure.

Dr Ajaka explained that the move was driven by the rising cases of mental health issues and drug abuse, which have overstretched the current facility.

“The current psychiatric hospital is overstretched, with patients often waiting for months for admission. The new and upgraded facilities will provide modern treatment conditions,” he added.

In addition, plans are underway to equip the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, with advanced diagnostic machines including CT Scan, MRI, and Mammography equipment.

The Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, noted that the Executive Council took far-reaching decisions across key sectors, including health, infrastructure, local government, and security.

This healthcare expansion is expected to greatly enhance medical service delivery and bring quality healthcare closer to residents across Ondo State.
