Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has revealed that the renovation of Olumo Rock Tourist Centre has dramatically increased its revenue from about ₦3 million per year to approximately ₦40 million per month.
The governor made the disclosure on Thursday while commissioning the 5.5-kilometre Elega–Miliki–Saje–Bode-Olude–Alhaji Sugar Road in Abeokuta.
Abiodun said the iconic tourist site was underperforming before his administration intervened. He explained that the facility generated only ₦3–4 million annually when he assumed office, reflecting its poor state at the time.
“When I shut it down and carried out the refurbishment of Olumo Rock, it began to generate about ₦10 million a week, about ₦40 million a month, compared to ₦3 million a year,” he stated.
The governor noted that Olumo Rock has now become one of Nigeria’s top tourist destinations, ranking first or second on Google searches for tourist sites in the country.
Following the renovation, the state government briefly introduced a free-entry policy to allow the public to rediscover the historical site, which led to massive visitor turnout.
The free entry was later suspended due to overcrowding and safety concerns. The facility has since been concessioned to a private operator for better management and sustained revenue generation.
Olumo Rock remains a flagship project in Ogun State’s tourism development drive.
