The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has commenced a formal investigation into a reported data breach at the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).
The investigation is being carried out under Section 46(3) of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023.
In a statement, the NDPC expressed serious concern over the increasing sophistication of threat actors targeting critical national databases.
The Commission said the probe underscores the need to protect public trust and maintain the integrity of Nigeria’s digital and economic ecosystem.
“The investigation of the instant case will, inter alia, cover the procedures and outcomes of Access Control Mechanisms, Data Privacy Impact Assessments, Vulnerability Assessment and Penetration Testing (VAPT), as well as due diligence on third-party data processors,” the NDPC stated.
Despite the incident, the Commission assured Nigerians that the country’s data protection frameworks remain fundamentally strong, both in technology and institutional capacity.
It noted that the continued growth in the adoption of data-driven services reflects sustained public confidence in digital systems.
The outcome of the investigation is expected to be made public in due course.
