Okonkwo Slams Amupitan, Alleges Plot to Weaken ADC Ahead of 2027

Kenneth Okonkwo, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and member of its National Working Committee, has strongly criticised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Joash Amupitan, accusing him of being influenced by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to undermine the ADC’s chances in the 2027 general elections.

Okonkwo described the INEC chairman as incompetent and dishonest, claiming that APC is using “charlatans” to truncate and destabilise the ADC because President Bola Tinubu does not want any serious opposition or competition in 2027.

He alleged that certain individuals are misrepresenting court rulings and pressuring INEC to act against the recognised leadership of the ADC, which was previously endorsed by former INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, after an 18-month verification process.

Speaking on the matter, Okonkwo said the current moves against the party, including threats and letters to INEC, are part of a grand plot by the APC to ensure Tinubu faces no credible challenge in the next presidential election.

The ADC leader maintained that the party’s authentic leadership structure remains intact and warned that any attempt to deregister or weaken the ADC could have serious implications for Nigeria’s democracy.

This latest outburst comes amid ongoing leadership disputes within the ADC, with factions trading accusations as the 2027 polls approach.
