The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has debunked a viral infographic circulating online that falsely claims the Federal Government has introduced a new tax on vehicles, set to take effect from July 1.
In a statement issued by Mr. Dare Adekambi, Special Adviser to the NRS Chairman, Dr. Zacch Adedeji, and spokesperson for the agency, the NRS described the infographic as “false and misleading.”
The misleading material reportedly urges owners of private, commercial, and corporate vehicles to pay an unspecified “vehicle tax” either online or at approved banks and agencies. It also directs the public to the website http://www.firs.gov.ng for more details which is incorrect. The official website of the Nigeria Revenue Service is http://www.nrs.gov.ng.
Adekambi stressed that the Federal Government has not introduced any fresh tax on vehicles as claimed in the anonymous graphic, which bears no identifiable author or official source.“The NRS wishes to state categorically that the information did not emanate from the service or any government agency,” he said.
The agency urged Nigerians to disregard the fabricated message and rely solely on information from verified official channels of the government and its agencies.“Citizens are therefore advised to disregard the fabricated messages designed to mislead the public and instead rely on official government channels for information on government policies,” Adekambi added.
He further encouraged the public to follow the NRS’s official social media handles and website (www.nrs.gov.ng) (www.nrs.gov.ng) for accurate and up-to-date information on tax matters and the agency’s activities. This clarification comes amid broader tax reforms in Nigeria, including the transition from the former Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to the new Nigeria Revenue Service under the 2025 Tax Reform Acts.
The NRS continues to emphasise transparency and the need to combat misinformation around taxation. Note: Always verify tax-related announcements directly through official government platforms to avoid falling victim to scams or fake news.
