The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has strongly condemned the Nigerian military’s bombing of Jilli Market in Borno State, describing the incident as “atrocious” and one “accidental bombing too many.”
In a statement issued on Monday, the group demanded the immediate suspension of the pilots involved and all senior officers who ordered the strike, pending a full independent investigation.
MURIC said more than 56 people were reportedly killed in the bombing, which occurred on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at the Borno-Yobe border market.
“This is perhaps the third or fourth of such erratic bombings. It is the height of ineptitude,” the group stated.
“How many times will our Air Force kill innocent civilians? What happened to intelligence gathering? Who commanded the raid? Who gave the order? Who flew the jets?”
The rights group questioned how a market could be mistaken for a terrorist gathering and called for answers from the authorities. It also demanded that the National Assembly take up the matter, saying the Nigerian Air Force alone cannot be trusted to investigate the incident.
“We demand immediate suspension of all those involved from the pilot and co-pilot to the senior officers who approved the bombing. This must not go without a thorough probe,” MURIC added.
The military, however, maintained that the market had long been identified as a major corridor and convergence point for Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists and their collaborators.
