Benue Farmers Flee Homes as Herder Attacks Intensify

Many residents of farming communities in Benue State have abandoned their villages and fled to safer areas following a recent surge in attacks and killings, especially in remote farming settlements.

Since the onset of the rainy season, farmers in Uvir and Nyiev wards of Guma Local Government Area have been unable to access their farmlands due to fear of armed herders who now move freely with cattle through the areas.

Large portions of fertile farmland in the council now lie uncultivated, while many farmers remain in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps.

Normal activities are largely limited to Gbajimba, the council headquarters, and parts of Mbawa ward.

A similar situation is playing out in Gwer West Local Government Area, a major rice-producing region.

While Naka town remains relatively safe, residents have fled surrounding villages to the headquarters and nearby areas.

Following a recent attack in Mbalom that killed 17 people, displaced persons who relocated to towns such as Ikpayongu, Igbor, and Aliade say they are still too afraid to return home.

A resident of Ikyaribo village in Guma, Joe Shom, narrated how he escaped an attack by running into a nearby forest, only for his sister to be assaulted by the attackers.
