Lagos seals two properties, others over wastewater discharge

The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) has sealed off two properties in Ikotun and other facilities in Ajah over the discharge of untreated wastewater into the environment.

A statement by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the enforcement action was carried out on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at No. 13, Oritola Street and No. 1, Temitope Street, Pipeline, Ikotun, following repeated complaints from residents, prior warnings, and confirmed findings from investigations.

Authorities said the affected properties were found to be releasing untreated wastewater through pipes onto the roads, a situation that persisted despite earlier interventions and was considered a public nuisance.

“The present situation which remains unabated showed that the properties were deliberately releasing untreated wastewater into the environment through pipes onto the roads, thereby constituting public nuisance,” the statement said.

In a related operation the same day, the agency also shut down a public toilet and a mechanic workshop along Badore Road, Ajah, for discharging wastewater indiscriminately into public drains and the surrounding environment.

“@followlasg reiterates the need for residents and property managers to adhere strictly to proper wastewater management practices. Individual or organisation found contravening environmental regulations will be meted with appropriate sanctions and possible prosecution in accordance with the enabling laws,” the statement added.

The agency urged residents and property owners to comply with environmental regulations, warning that defaulters would face penalties and possible legal action.
