The defection of former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has left the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in a state of panic, confusion, and deep worry, according to Hon. Salihu Yakasai. In a recent television interview, the prominent Kano politician and analyst described the move as a major political earthquake that has rattled the APC, especially in its strongholds in the North.
“Kwankwaso’s defection has thrown the APC into a state of confusion and worry,” Yakasai stated, noting that the ruling party is now scrambling to contain the fallout and engage in damage control, particularly in Kano State.
He argued that the APC leadership, including at the highest levels, appears jittery over the development, as Kwankwaso’s massive followership and the strength of the Kwankwasiyya movement could significantly alter the political equation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The defection, which took place on Monday, March 30, 2026, was witnessed by a large crowd in Kano. It came shortly after Kwankwaso resigned from the NNPP and follows the earlier move by his political associate and current Kano Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who aligned with the APC, a development described by some Kwankwasiyya loyalists as a betrayal.
Yakasai maintained that the APC is now witnessing an exodus of political actors into the ADC, which is increasingly being viewed as a viable opposition platform. He claimed the ruling party is desperate and has resorted to various tactics to counter the growing momentum of the ADC.
