The Kwankwasiyya Movement has called for the immediate resignation of Professor Joash Amupitan, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accusing him of losing moral authority and public trust amid ongoing political crises.
In a press statement issued on April 2, 2026, and signed by its spokesperson, Habibu Sale Mohammed, the movement warned that the INEC chairman’s continued stay in office poses a serious risk to Nigeria’s democratic stability and national unity.
The group linked its demand to INEC’s handling of the leadership crisis in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where the commission has suspended recognition of factions pending court decisions.
It described this as part of a broader pattern of judicial inconsistencies and electoral body actions that are weakening opposition parties and undermining democracy.
The statement highlighted similar leadership disputes affecting major parties like the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), saying these crises have eroded internal party democracy and narrowed the political space.
The Kwankwasiyya Movement also criticised the judiciary for issuing conflicting rulings and disregarding legal principles such as stare decisis.
It faulted INEC for planning a voter revalidation exercise, describing it as ill-timed and potentially disenfranchising millions of voters.
“This revalidation exercise bears all the hallmarks of a systemic trap capable of suppressing voter turnout and distorting electoral participation,” the statement said.
The movement urged the immediate suspension of the voter revalidation exercise and called on the National Judicial Council (NJC) to address conflicting court orders.
It further appealed to political actors to stop weaponising the judiciary and urged civil society and the international community to monitor developments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Democracy cannot survive where political parties are incapacitated by judicial confusion and where the electoral umpire is perceived to be complicit,” the statement added.
