Kano Governor Nominates Murtala Garo as Deputy Governor

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has formally nominated Alhaji Murtala Garo as the new Deputy Governor of the state.

The nomination was transmitted to the Kano State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation, according to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad.

Governor Yusuf acted in line with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which allows a governor to nominate a deputy in the event of a vacancy.

The position became vacant after the voluntary resignation of former Deputy Governor Abdussalam Gwarzo on March 27, 2026.

The governor said the choice of Garo followed wide consultations with key stakeholders across the state.

Describing the nominee as a seasoned politician with over two decades of experience, Muhammad noted that Garo had served as State Organising Secretary of his party, Special Adviser to the Governor, elected Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area, and Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano State.

He also served as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and was the deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 elections.

The statement added that the nomination is part of efforts to strengthen governance and sustain effective service delivery in Kano State.
