Kaduna Court Adjourns El-Rufai’s Bail Hearing to First Week of June 2026

Justice Darius Khobo of the Kaduna State High Court has adjourned the bail hearing for former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai to the first week of June 2026.

The adjournment was announced on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, during proceedings in the high-profile corruption case brought by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

El-Rufai is facing multiple charges bordering on alleged financial crimes, abuse of office, fraud, and related offences during his tenure as governor.

The development prolongs the former governor’s legal battles, as he remains in custody pending the determination of his bail application in this matter. This comes despite him securing bail in a separate but related case at the Federal High Court in Kaduna last week.

Court insiders noted that previous delays stemmed from the prosecution’s amendment of charges, including a nine-count revised charge that dropped a co-defendant, leaving El-Rufai as the sole accused. Defence counsel Ubong Akpan (SAN) had earlier expressed surprise at the amended charges, stating the team needed time to review them.

The allegations against El-Rufai include authorising the release of about ₦11 billion for an unexecuted light rail project, approving excess severance allowances, mismanaging World Bank funds, and the unlawful award of contracts in breach of procurement laws. He has consistently denied all the allegations.

The case has attracted significant public attention, with tight security at court sittings and restrictions on media access in earlier proceedings.

The latest adjournment also raises questions about El-Rufai’s ability to participate in upcoming political activities, including potential ADC primaries scheduled in the coming weeks.

Proceedings will resume in the first week of June for further hearing on the bail application.
