Jos Attack Unacceptable, Act Now – US Dept of State to Tinubu govt

The United States Department of State has strongly condemned the recent deadly attacks in Jos, Plateau State, labeling them unacceptable and calling on the Nigerian government under President Bola Tinubu to take urgent action to enhance security, especially for Christian communities during the Easter period.

In a statement issued Thursday by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of African Affairs and shared on Facebook, Mark Walker, Principal Advisor for Global Religious Freedom, expressed concern over the targeted violence.

“We call on the Nigerian government to significantly ramp up security for Christians ahead of and during Easter,” Walker said.

“We recognize and appreciate the steps the Government of Nigeria has taken to improve security, however the targeted killing of Christians, especially on Christian holidays, is unacceptable. We urge the Nigerian leadership to engage, and to do so now.”

The condemnation comes after gunmen carried out attacks on Palm Sunday in Jos and surrounding communities, striking predominantly Christian areas.

The assailants reportedly invaded communities in the early hours, firing sporadically, setting homes on fire, and killing several residents while injuring many others.

The violence disrupted Holy Week religious activities and spread fear among locals.

This incident fits into a recurring pattern of violence in Plateau State, where Christian communities have faced repeated assaults, often timed around major religious observances.

Nigerian authorities, including President Tinubu, have visited the area, vowed to end the killings, and ordered enhanced security measures.

The U.S. statement adds to growing international pressure on the Tinubu administration to address insecurity in the region more decisively and protect vulnerable populations during this sensitive period.
