Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ought to have formally recognized Nafiu Bala Gombe as the National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Wike made the remark on Friday during a media briefing in Abuja while addressing the ongoing leadership crisis rocking the opposition party.
According to the FCT Minister, INEC’s decision not to recognize any faction of the ADC until the matter is resolved in court is actually a blessing for the party. He argued that the commission should have gone ahead and recognized Bala Gombe based on available judgments.“In my own opinion, INEC, by that judgment, ought to have recognized Bala Gombe as the ADC national chairman,” Wike stated.
He added: “ADC should be happy that INEC said, ‘Look, we are not going to recognize any of you until you sort your matter in court.’'
The comments come after INEC removed the names of former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola from its portal, where they had been listed as National Chairman and National Secretary of the ADC respectively.
The commission also declined to recognize Bala Gombe, who is pursuing a court declaration as national chairman.
INEC has suspended recognition of all factions in the party and will not monitor any conventions or congresses organized by the rival groups pending the final determination of the substantive suit before the Federal High Court.
The ADC had earlier accused INEC of behaving like a “criminal organization” and taking sides in the leadership tussle.
